SOLD - Eugénie, Empress of France, and the Infant Prince Imperial
A very attractive, rare, and superbly well made figure depicting Eugénie, Empress of France, cradling the infant Prince Imperial.
The Empress is crowned and wears a white and pink bodice with a long pink ruffled skirt with blue trim. Her left foot rests on an orange footrest. The baby Prince wears a long, flowing christening robe and a bonnet.
This beautiful figure pairs with a standing figure of Emperor Napoleon III.
This figure displays brilliantly and is offered in very good repaired condition. There is a professional, concealed repair to the Empress’ neck which is essentially only noticeable at close inspection. There is a negligible scrape to the top of the central point of the crown. Fragile features - such as the two subjects’ arms and hands - are intact and undamaged.
This is perhaps the finest figure depicting Empress Eugénie produced by the Staffordshire potters.
Reference: P. D. Gordon Pugh, Staffordshire Portrait Figures, p. C268, pl. 34, fig. 79
Height: 7.5” (Napoleon, the taller)
Date: c. 1856
Provenance: The Kirkland Tellwright Collection
