sold out

A very fine and rare pair of figures depicting Napoleon III, Emperor of France, and Eugénie, Empress Consort of the French, with the infant Prince Imperial, produced shortly after the Prince’s birth in 1856.

Napoleon, modelled standing in military uniform with a plumed hat in his right hand and a the handle of a sword in his left, looks over the seated Empress who is crowned and holding the infant Prince who is wearing a long white robe and bonnet. Napoleon is modelled on an octagonal base and the Empress on a rounded base.

Both figures present beautifully - well modelled and proficiently decorated. Napoleon’s neck has been professionally repaired and concealed and there is a very small old chip to the front left (viewer’s right) corner of the base, as well as very sparse flaking. The Empress is practically perfect with no apparent restoration or repair, only very minor flaking to the orange foot stool and some superficial wear to the blue ruffles of her sleeves and skirt.

Reference: P. D. Gordon Pugh, Staffordshire Portrait Figures, p. C268, pl. 34, figs 78 and 79

Height: 8.25” (Napoleon, the taller)

Date: c. 1856
