A good looking heavy earthenware figure depicting two men sitting at a barrel reading a newspaper announcing the outbreak of war.
The first versions of this figure were produced in 1854 at the outbreak of the Crimean War. The figure was reproduced throughout the 19tyh century whenever war was declared. This iteration seems to be an earlier version.
The figure presents well. There is some very discreet restoration to the moulded branch features, and the black enamels have been repainted. There is a firing flaw to the back and some nibbles around the base.
