A good looking heavy earthenware figure depicting two men sitting at a barrel reading a newspaper announcing the outbreak of war.
The first versions of this figure were produced in 1854 at the outbreak of the Crimean War, and the word ‘War’ is typically visible on the paper the pipe-smoking man is reading.
Pugh posits that this figure was reproduced and reissued throughout the 19th century whenever war was declared. This figure certain seems to be later than the 1850s and dates to the later part of the 19th century.
The figure is in excellent original condition with no damage or loss. There are some spots of flaking to the pipe-smoking man’s shoes.
