Vendor with Basket

£140.00

A fabulous early Staffordshire bocage figure depicting a vendor carrying a basket on his head.

The vendor wears a black jacket, blue waistcoat, yellow breeches, and a black hat. He holds something in his left hand. His right hand steadies the handle of a large woven basket atop his head which is decorated with a bunch of grapes. The figure is finished with bocage and purple and orange flowers.

This delightful pearlware figure is full of appeal and very well made. It displays excellently. It appears to be in very good condition and I cannot spot any signs of restoration - though I cannot altogether rule out the possibility of professional, ‘invisible’ restoration to some extent. There are some very small nibbles to the edges of the back of the bocage leaves and to the right-most tip (viewer’s left) of the bunch of grapes. A really wonderful early figure.
