A nicely made small figure depicting Uncle Tom and Eva from the abolitionist novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
As with similar Staffordshire depictions of these characters, Uncle Tom is seated and little Eva stands on his leg, his arm around her.
Uncle Tom’s Cabin was a very popular subject for the Staffordshire potters who had deep abolitionist sympathies. Although the depiction of Tom in most such figures is heavily inspired by music hall acts, the sentiments of the potters towards this character were warm.
The figure presents well and is in good condition. There are some deep crazing / firing lines (which are not damage) across the front and back of the figure and a negligible little nick to the base.
