A charming and well-made little figure depicting the young Prince of Wales with a toy boat on a table.
This figure was probably produced by the Alpha Factory, which produced a number of similar figures of the Prince and Princess of Wales. This particular figure is a rare and unusual example as the Prince is wearing a hat. In all recorded Alpha figures of this kind, the Prince is carrying - rather than wearing - his hat.
The figure presents very well. There is a small chip to the brim of the hat (not visible from the front) and there is some discreet loss to the edge of the boat’s smaller sail which has been repainted. There are some small firing flaws to the sides of the Prince’s neck.
Reference: Possibly unrecorded (but similar examples can be found in P. D. Gordon Pugh, Staffordshire Portrait Figures, p. A150, pl. 47B)
Height: 6.5”
Date: c. 1845
Provenance: A substantial, high-quality private collection (name unknown)
