The Duke of Wellington
A very large and imposing figure depicting Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington.
Wellington stands wearing a long blue coat, a patterned waistcoat, white trousers and black shoes. In his right hand he holds a pair of gloves at his hip, and in his left he holds a scroll. The figure is titled ‘Wellington’ in calligraphic gilt lettering.
This is a very desirable figure of considerable stature (although an even larger version is recorded).
It is offered in very good condition though it must be noted that the black shoes have been repainted (and, therefore, great care should be taken in exposing the figure to water). A piece of debris is hardened into the back of his right arm - a manufacturing imperfection. There is some discolouration and small nibbles to the base, commensurate with age.
Reference: A. & N. Harding, Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835 - 1875: Book One, p. 147, fig. 372
Height: 17”
Date: c. 1850
Provenance: Former stock of Alan Jones Antiques, Okehampton (label affixed to base)
