The Crucifixion of Christ
A superb and powerful early Staffordshire figure depicting the crucifixion of Christ.
Christ is crucified on the cross beneath sprigs of bocage and the sign placed by the Roman soldiers - ‘Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum’. He is flanked by two figures reaching out to Him - it is theorised that these are His mother Mary and Mary Magdalene, though I have also seen it suggested that one is Joseph of Arimathea.
This quality figure is offered in very good condition. There is some restoration to the attendant figures which have been re-applied, and some superficial restoration to the bocage leaves, but all restoration has been carried out professionally. This figure has been made with great dexterity and extraordinary care.
Reference: Myrna Schkolne, Staffordshire Figures 1780 - 1840, Vol. 2, p. 166, fig. 89.1
Height: 10”
Date: c. 1820
