The Binding of Isaac
A superb and powerful large Staffordshire spill vase depicting the story of the binding of Isaac (Genesis 22).
Abraham is preparing to sacrifice his son, Isaac. Isaac is bound, and Abraham holds a knife aloft. Beneath Isaac is a ram caught in a thicket which, per Genesis, Abraham will be commanded to sacrifice instead. The whole story is, therefore, set out in a single figure.
This biblical story was a popular subject for the Staffordshire potters. Many beautiful early Staffordshire figures depict the scene - often including an angel which has arrived to command Abraham to halt the sacrifice. This is an unusual later example.
The figure is well made and beautifully decorated in the gilt-heavy style. The glaze is thick and syrupy and the minimal colour is used to great effect.
Reference: Stephen Duckworth, Victorian Staffordshire Pottery Religious Figures, p. 92, fig. A.3
Height: 12.5”
Date: c. 1850s (per Stephen Duckworth)
Provenance: The Stephen Duckworth Collection
