Tam o' Shanter and Souter Johnnie
A bright and colourful matched pair of figures depicting Tam o’ Shanter and Souter Johnnie (from the Robert Burns poem Tam o’ Shanter) drinking.
Tam wears a blue jacket, green waistcoat, black neckerchief, orange hat, and purple suspenders. He holds a mug in his right hand. Johnnie wears an orange jacket, blue apron, yellow trousers, and a yellow plumed cap. He holds a jug in his right hand.
This pair bear certain hallmarks of the Alpha Factory but I would not commit to that attribution.
The two figures are in lovely condition. Tam has a firing flaw over the throat, a small chip to the left side of the base, and a very small superficial chip at the bottom of the visible portion of the base below his right foot. Johnnie has a firing flaw to the left side of the base and some light flaking to his orange jacket. In all, these figures are in very good order and display beautifully.
Reference: Possibly unrecorded
Height: 5.75”
Date: c. 1845
Provenance: Tam: The Sheila Brooks Collection; Johnnie: A substantial, high-quality private collection, name unknown. (The former owner’s reference label has been left attached should the buyer be able to identify other figures from the same collection.)
