Sleeping Boy with Dog (after 'The Red Boy')

£45.00

A rare and interesting little figure depicting a boy asleep on a rocky base, a small dog on his lap.

The form of this figure is based on an existing figure of Master Charles William Lambton, elder son of John Lambton (later Earl of Durham) and immortalised in the famous 1825 painting The Red Boy by Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA. The original Lambton figure is very attractive and the distinctive form must have appealed to the Staffordshire potters who produced this figure in the same pose and with the same base as the original. The presence of a dog, however, indicates that the subject is not Lambton himself but a generic, pastoral scene.

A pair to this figure - depicting a sleeping girl with a dog - is recorded.

Some speculate that the original Lambton figures were produced by the Dudson Factory but while this is a credible suggestion I can neither verify this nor attest to this particular figure being Dudson.

This figure is offered in fairly good condition. It displays well and the form of the base is particularly appealing. A crack at the back of the base - probably an unstable firing flaw - has been filled and stabilised, though I cannot say when. There is some flaking to the back of the hair.
