A handsome and beautifully decorated porcelain figure of a sheep shearer made by the Dudson Factory. This particular example is on an unusual pink base instead of the more widely seen brown and gilt base which is a hallmark of Dudson Factory figures of the period.
The man - in ornate agricultural dress and broad-brimmed hat - sits with a sheep in his lap. Green shredded clay moss is attached to the base (in other examples, these shredded clay features are left white to depict shorn fleece). The man’s outfit is heavily gilded.
The figure presents very well but some flaws must be noted. Both ears of the sheep are lost. Damage to the hat has been repaired and a small chip to back of the hat brim remains. Flaking to the trousers have been overpainted reasonably proficiently. Notwithstanding, this remains a very attractive figure.
Reference: Possibly unrecorded
Height: 6.5”
Date: c. 1840
Provenance: A substantial, high-quality private collection (name unknown)
