A handsome and beautifully decorated figure of a sheep shearer.
The man - in ornate agricultural dress and broad-brimmed hat - sits with a sheep in his lap. Piles of shorn fleece are at his feet on a rich brown and green base with gilt decorations. The man’s outfit is also heavily gilded.
The figure presents very well. The hat has been repaired and overpainted and there is a small chip to one side. The sheep’s right ear (facing away from the viewer) is lost. Fortunately, the loss of the ‘back ear’ is not visible when displayed. There is some light loss of gilt. These flaws notwithstanding, the figure is a beautiful and richly coloured example.
Reference: Possibly unrecorded
Height: 6.5”
Date: c. 1840
Provenance: A substantial, high-quality private collection (name unknown)
