A charming little figure of a seated Turk playing a musical instrument - probably the work of the Dudson Factory.
I have not been able to find a reference but it is possible that this figure represents Artabanes (or perhaps even Mandane - the sex is not clear) from the opera Artaxerxes, but I would not swear to this.
The figure is is nicely decorated with a brown ‘Dudson base’, colourful clothing, and gilt. While presenting well, the figure is not without flaws. The motif on the figure’s turban has two superficial chips - one side has been regilded and the other has been left as is. There is a superficial chip or manufacturing flaw on the instrument. There is rubbing to the gilt in many places, particularly the base. Glaze has been meanly applied so the creases in the base are missing glaze. There are some nibbles to the base, some from the time of production.
Reference: Possibly unrecorded
Height: 4.25”
Date: c. 1840
Provenance: A substantial, high-quality private collection, name unknown.
