Seated Musicians

£345.00

A very fine and rare early pair of seated musicians, modelled after an 18th century Derby pair.

The gentleman plays the flute with an open music score on his lap. An instrument case and piles of books lie under his chair. The lady plays a stringed instrument and has a dog on her lap. A lute and a pile of books are under her chair.

These figures are superbly modelled and decorated. They are full of detail, meticulously composed with surprising features in every corner.

Both figures display excellently. There is a tiny bit of loss to the end of the man’s flute, a stable stress hairline to the back-right leg of the lady’s chair, and some small, discreet nibbles and flakes in places (such as to the stringed instrument), but their aesthetic appeal is not compromised. I cannot detect any restoration but do not rule out the possibility of some professional restoration.
