Seated Man with Dog (possibly Dudson)

£100.00

A very attractive porcelaneous figure of a man - perhaps a woodsman or harvester - sitting on a tree trunk with a dog at his side.

The man wears a white and gilt jacket, a yellow spotted waistcoat, green breeches, an and a white and gilt brimmed hat. He holds a large flagon of ale in his left hand which is resting on his knee, and strokes the head of a dog with his right hand. The white dog with black spots is sitting up, alert, at the man’s right side. A gilt axe and a gilt sickle lie on the ground at the man’s left side. He sits on a white base with green and purple sieved clay clumps.

The figure is beautifully modelled and decorated - an intricate and carefully executed design. The figure is in excellent condition but for the fact that the man’s left thumb (on the hand which holds the beer) is missing. Aside from this, the figure is in lovely condition with the decoration and gilding both in good order.

A dealer’s label from John Howard is affixed to the underside but I cannot find a specific reference in his archive.
