Sailor

£75.00

An attractive figure of a sailor, standing cross-legged with his right hand on his hip and his left leaning on a large anchor.

The sailor is well coloured and wears a cobalt jacket, striped sailor’s shirt, black necktie, belt, and straw hat with a bow. The anchor is simply rendered in black.

The figure presents very nicely - it is well glazed and appealingly coloured. A number of superficial chips and knocks have been filled and stabilised - most notably on the left hand but also on the rocky background behind the anchor and the left ankle. These refills are undecorated. There are also some hairline cracks to the back of the figure - apparently the result of stress - but these are stable.

Reference: P. D. Gordon Pugh, Staffordshire Portrait Figures, p. C296, pl. 84, fig. 247

Height: 7”

Date: c. 1850s

Provenance: A substantial, high-quality private collection, name unknown. (The former owner’s reference label has been left attached should the buyer be able to identify other figures from the same collection.)
