Reverend John Wesley
A pleasing little figure depicting the founder of Methodism, Reverend John Wesley, preaching from an open Bible.
Wesley wears a white surplice, a white cassock, a white clerical collar, and black shoes. He holds a red-bound Bible in both hands (the text is illustrated in the open Bible). The title ‘Wesley’ is written on a white base in gilt script. The figure has a hollow base.
The figure is offered in good, complete condition. There are patches of staining - particularly around the collar and the back of the surplice - and specs of kiln soot in the glaze. Gilt highlighting the cuffs of the surplice and cassock has largely faded, but the gilt of the title remains legible. Although a humble example of the form, this is an endearing representation of a uniquely popular historical figure.

Height: 6.75”
Date: c. 1850s
