A very handsome and comparatively early Staffordshire figure depicting the founder of Methodism, Reverend John Wesley, in the act of preaching.
Wesley wears a black surplus and cassock and a white clerical collar. He has one hand raised as if in exposition and stands on a simple square green base. The base is hollow.
The figure is decorated with underglaze colours with a green enamel painted base. The face may be painted with enamels.
The figure is in very good condition, with only one or two small flakes to the green base. The raised hand appears to be original but I could not discount professional restoration entirely.
Reference: Myrna Schkolne, Staffordshire Figures 1780 - 1840, Volume Two, ch. 109
Height: 8.25”
Year: c. 1830s
Provenance: The Stephen Duckworth Collection
