SOLD - Robert Burns

A rare and very fine figure which is generally thought to depict the Scottish poet Robert Burns.

Pugh identifies this figure as Burns but notes that it is not confirmed. The Hardings, in their Second Addendum, also identify the figure as Burns.

Burns wears a cobalt jacket, a plaid waistcoat, green breeches, and yellow socks. He holds a scroll in his left hand and his right hand rests on his hip. He stands next to a pink column or plinth upon which a book and manuscript are resting.

The quality of the modelling of this figure is excellent, with good depth in the face and hands and effective use of independent moulds. A very impressive composition.

The figure is in excellent condition. There is a very small chip to the nose which seems to have occurred prior to enamelling and there is some discolouration to the base. There seems to be some discreet retouching to the hair. An Oliver-Sutton Antiques sticker is affixed to the inside of the hollow base.

Reference: P. D. Gordon Pugh, Staffordshire Portrait Figures, p. H578, pl. 12, fig. 45

Height: 8.5”

Date: c. 1840

Provenance: Oliver-Sutton Antiques (sticker present)
