sold out

An unusual and historically compelling pair of small Staffordshire figures representing the poor and orphaned children of Bristol and the schools set up by Christian philanthropists to provide them with education.

The left-hand figure is titled ‘Red Maid - Bristol’ in gilt. It depicts a schoolgirl in the uniform of the Red Maids School. She wears a straw bonnet, white linen shawl, and an apron over a red dress.

The right-hand figure is titled ‘Colston Boy - Bristol’ in gilt. It depicts a schoolboy carrying a bible and wearing the uniform of The Colston School (founded by the philanthropist Edward Colston) - a cap and long smock, depicted here in cobalt.

This pair is part of a garniture. The centrepiece figure (not offered here) is titled George Mullers Orphans and depicts two schoolchildren - a boy and a girl - wearing the uniform of a school founded by the evangelist George Muller.

Both figures are in very good condition with no damage. The Red Maid girl’s red dress has sustained some flaking. The figures likely date to the later part of the 19th century.
