Recumbent Sheep (Ralph Wood Type)

£195.00

A very charming early figure of a recumbent sheep, possibly attributed to Ralph Wood of Burslem.

The sheep is hollow-based and is simply decorated with coloured glazes in a style generally associated with the late 18th century.

The ears of the sheep have been professionally restored, though it should be noted that the figure may have been modelled originally as a horned ram. Several chips to the edge of the base have been restored but some smaller nibbles have been left. There are some firing flaws and hairlines near the base, and an old small superficial chip to the sheep’s left hindleg and nose.

While imperfect and with a degree of restoration (most notably the ears), this remains a pleasing and accessible example of an 18th century figure.

Height: 4.25”
