A beautiful and very fine hunting dog, recumbent on a cobalt blue cushion.
This dog - possibly a product of the Alpha Factory - is beautifully modelled and decorated with a soulful, lifelike appearance and good details and textures. The cushion is modelled with leaves in both front corners and trimmed with gilt.
The figure is in reasonably good condition and displays very nicely though there a number of firing flaws including one down the back of the dog’s neck which diverges down its back and another down its chest between its front paws. There is a scuff on the front right corner, and some enamel flaking to the over-glaze black.
Reference: A. & N. Harding, Victorian Staffordshire Dogs, p. 103, fig. 2731C
Height: 4”
Date: c. 1840
Provenance: The Sheila Brooks Collection
