Queen Victoria and Prince Albert with an Umbrella
An interesting figure depicting Queen Victoria and Prince Albert sheltering under an umbrella.
The Queen wears a blue bodice with an orange sash, a long white skirt, and a plumed hat. Albert wears a military jacket with gilt insignia and a colourful sash. He holds a plumed hat in his left hand. They stand underneath a large lilac umbrella.
The figure presents very well and is a curious amalgam of two similar figures recorded in Harding Book Three - one depicts the couple under an umbrella but Albert’s hat is omitted, and the other depicts them without the umbrella but Albert’s hat is present.
The figure is in generally good condition. There is a chip to Albert’s left cuff which seems to have occurred prior to glazing, and there is some discreet retouching of hair and the hat. There are a couple of small nibbled to the brim of the umbrella. These points aside, the figure is in good order.
Reference: (An amalgamation of) A. & N. Harding, Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835 - 1875: Book Three, p. 49, fig. a468A; and p. 50, fig. a480A
Height: 7.75”
Date: c. 1845
Provenance: A substantial, high-quality private collection, name unknown. (The former owner’s reference label has been left attached should the buyer be able to identify other figures from the same collection.)
