Prince Frederick Charles of Prussia
A large, fine, rare, and imposing equestrian figure of Frederick Charles of Prussia (1801 - 1883), younger son of King Frederick William III.
The prince rides on a white horse with gilt spots on its coat and gilt dashes on its mane and tail. The Prince wears a fine plumed helmet, white military uniform with epaulettes, a blue sash, pink belt, and black boots. Clothing details and medals are picked out in gilt. Particularly attractive is the horse’s saddle cloth in pastel shades of pink and blue. The title - unusually rendered as ‘P F Charles’ - is written in raised, gilded capital letters.
Gordon Pugh ascertained that this is part of a series of four Prussians - two pairs. The first pair is Count von Moltke and Prince Bismarck, and the second pair is General von der Tann and Prince Frederick Charles. These figures can be split into their respective pairs by their saddle-cloths - Moltke and Bismarck have single saddle-cloths; whereas von der Tann and Frederick Charles have double saddle-cloths.
The figure is offered in very good condition. There is some enamel flaking to the over-glazed black of the prince’s boot and sword. The prince’s neck has been professionally restored. Some gilt features have been professionally repainted. Any such restoration has been done to a very high standard.
This is a very impressive and beautifully decorated figure, as well as a rarity among Prussian-themed Staffordshire figures.

Height: 15.25”
Date: c. 1870
Provenance: Collection of Sir Alfred Owen of New Hall
