Prince Albert and Queen Victoria with the Princess Royal
A very fine pair of figures depicting Prince Albert and Queen Victoria sitting on thrones, with the infant Princess Royal in the Queen’s arms.
The Queen wears a flowing cobalt and gilt robe, and Albert a cobalt and gilt jacket, green waistcoat, and pink trousers. The Princess Royal wears a long white, pink and gilt gown with a yellow hood. Albert holds a book in his right hand. They sit on thrones trimmed with green ermine. Their thrones are fully modelled and decorated in the round with separately modelled legs. They are modelled on round bases with gilt bands.
These are excellent early examples of figures made to celebrate the birth of the Princess Royal, their first child. They are excellently made - carefully modelled and decorated.
Both figures are in very good condition with a professional repair to Albert’s right wrist. Prince Albert has a number of original firing flaws - by his right leg, the left side of the throne behind the ermine, and beneath the back-left leg of the throne. Both figures exhibit a degree of kiln debris in the glaze and some superficial rubs (such as to Albert’s face), but they present excellently. Ultimately, this is a delightful early pair offered in good order.
Reference: P. D. Gordon Pugh, Staffordshire Portrait Figures, p. A140, pl. 23, figs 63 and 64
Height: 5.75” (Victoria, the larger)
Date: c. 1841
