Pair of Recumbent Cats

£975.00

An exceptional, extremely rare and desirable pair of Staffordshire recumbent cats.

These beautiful cats are decorated with under-glaze black and have piercing over-glaze yellow eyes. They sit on cobalt cushions with a band of gilt.

This particular pair are among the very finest cats produced by the Staffordshire potters in the Victorian period. They are very rare and highly sought after - full of character, well-modelled, and decorated with far more care than most pottery cats produced in this period. They were produced in this under-glaze black and also in copper lustre.

These cats are offered in good condition. Regarding imperfections, one cat has a small chip in the base (back side, not visible when displayed). The ear of one cat has been professionally restored. Both cats are from the same pot bank, and stylistically are a near-perfect match. If they are not a true pair they are as close as can be.
