A charming and rare little figure depicting Napoleon Bonaparte standing by the distant ship HMS Bellerophon in full rig, aboard which he would surrender in 1815.
This figure pairs with a figure of Nelson and HMS Victory.
The figure is in good original condition - a simple yet desirable composition and an important example of a Napoleonic Staffordshire figure. There is a small firing flaw on the back of the figure by the hull of the Bellerophon, and another firing flaw beneath the hull on the side of the figure.
Examples of this figure are recorded with the Bellerophon made from a separate press mould, but this version uses only one mould.
Pugh records this figure but has only photographed the Nelson and Victory figure, describing both as rare.
Reference: P. D. Gordon Pugh, Staffordshire Portrait Figures, p. C 256, pl. 10, fig. 10 (not photographed)
Height: 5.75”
Date: 1840s
Provenance: A substantial, high-quality private collection, name unknown. (The former owner’s reference label has been left attached should the buyer be able to identify other figures from the same collection.)
