SOLD - Medea at the Altar of Diana

£0.00
sold out

A fine early Staffordshire pearlware figure depicting Medea, the wife of Jason, at the altar of Diana.

The figure is well modelled with nice flowing details and clean, legible decoration.

There seems to be some light restoration to Medea’s right hand (curled behind the flaming urn she is placing on the altar - or however the legend describes it). Likewise the inside and upper back of her right sleeve has been painted in places, perhaps to disguise superficial scuffs. There is another spot of superficial restoration near the base of her robes near her left foot. Fortunately, this restoration is sympathetic and conservative.

Imperfections aside, this figure is very attractive and an interesting example of an early Staffordshire figural representation of Greek mythology.

Height: 8.25”

Date: c. 1810
