Mary Vining as Peter Wilkins

£50.00

A well modelled and nicely coloured figure depicting the actress Mrs Mary Vining in the role of Peter Wilkins in the play The Life and Adventures of Peter Wilkins.

Vining starred alongside Miss Glover who played Yourawkee. The two were popular subjects for the Staffordshire potters.

Two similar pairs of Glover and Vining are recorded (at the time of writing, a complete set of the other pair is available on this site). The modelling is lovely (particularly the rococo base). It is distinct from the other pair because, in this rendering, Vining is portrayed with long hair.

The figure is in good condition. There is a stress hairline crack emanating from the side of the base but this is stable. Some flakes to the overglaze black hair have been retouched.

Reference: A. & N. Harding, Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835 - 1875: Book One, p. 317, fig. 1160 [The Hardings give both pairs the same reference numbers]

Height: 7.5”

Date: c. 1840

Provenance: A substantial, high-quality private collection, name unknown. (The former owner’s reference label has been left attached should the buyer be able to identify other figures from the same collection.)
