SOLD - Mary and the Serpent
A fine, rare and striking Staffordshire figure depicting Mary, the mother of Jesus, with a serpent under her foot. This is an image of Mary which is rooted principally in the Catholic tradition - she is represented triumphing over evil.
This elegant and beautifully modelled figure shows Mary dressed in white with gilt highlights, her arms. Her foot is on the head of a green serpent with an apple (probably representing the fruit of the tree of knowledge) lying near it.
The figure presents well. There are some small nibbles around the edges of Mary’s cloak, particularly around her hands. Some of these nibbles may be remnants from production and some may be later damage or signs of restoration. There are some discreet firing flaws in some of the folds of Mary’s cloak. All such imperfections should be clear in the images.
Reference: Stephen Duckworth, Victorian Staffordshire Pottery Religious Figures, p. 105, fig. B.2
Height: 10.5”
Date: c. 1860s
Provenance: The Stephen Duckworth Collection
