A fine and delicate porcelain figure depicting a seated female musician in eastern or Ottoman dress with a stringed instrument in her lap. It is believed that this figure - which pairs with a similar male figure - depicts the character Mandane from the Thomas Arne opera Artaxerxes.
Figures of Mandane and Artabanes (the male pair) were produced in several forms of which this seems to be unrecorded but bears such notable similarities to recorded version that it must be the same subject.
This example is of lovely quality with independent hands and musical instrument. It is strikingly decorated.
The figure is in good condition but for an old chip to the back of the hollow base (not visible when displayed), some fritting, and fading of the gilt.
