An attractive and fine figural spill vase depicting a man and woman resting by a milestone indicating ‘LONDON 30 MILES’ in raised gilt capitals by a tree.
The source of inspiration for this popular figure has never been identified.
This figure is found in varying degrees of decoration - some very sparse, some very rich.
While not uncommon, this particular example is very appealing. It is crisp and fresh out of the mould, its gilt is in good order, and - most notably - the faces are very healthy and well coloured. Far better than many examples.
It is offered in very good condition. There is some entirely discreet retouching to overglaze black features, and a touch of fritting or shallow rubbing to the glaze of the tip of one branch.
