A charming and nicely coloured Staffordshire figure, likely depicting John the Baptist. The figure is titled ‘St Jean’ and it is speculated, therefore, that it may have been made for the French export market.
John, with long grey hair, wears a pink tunic, a patterned orange sash, and a green cloak. He carries a banner and his finger is raised in proclamation.
The figure is nicely presented. One foot has been noticeable restored and there are some very small nibbles to some of the more fragile edges of the model (such as around the sleeve of his cloak).
This figure was sold by Christie’s as part of the famous Property of Oliver-Sutton Antiques sale in 2000, and raised £306.
