Grandma's Hope
A sweet Staffordshire group figure titled ‘Grandma’s Hope’.
A matronly grandmother sits in a high-backed chair wearing a long colourful dress, pink coat, and bonnet. She is reading to a young boy who stands next to her knee (presumably a grandson) from a book on her lap. The title Grandma’s Hope is written in gilt in raised capital letters.
There is a pair to this figure (not offered here) featuring an elderly grandfather with a young granddaughter titled ‘Grandpa’s Joy’.
This figure is in very good condition with no structural damage. There is, however, fairly extensive enamel flaking to the over-glaze brown of the chair, and some to the child’s hair. The gilt of the title is slightly faded.
Reference: A. & N. Harding, Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835 - 1875, p. 141, fig. a2211C
Height: 8.5”
Date: c. 1860
