Glover and Vining as Yourawkee and Peter Wilkins

£125.00

An excellent and rare pair of figures depicting the actresses Miss Glover and Mrs Mary Vining performing the roles of Yourawkee and Peter Wilkins. The figure was first produced in 1837, ten years after they appeared in the play 'Peter Wilkins'. This particular pair may be slightly later.

This pair is in good condition with no apparent structural restoration. Glover’s wrist has a stress crack but has not been fully broken. The overglaze black shoes of both figures, as well as their hair, has been overpainted but the overall effect is satisfactory. There is a small flake to Vining’s right hand. Both figures have a degree of debris in the glaze. and some general wear around the bottom of the (hollow) bases.

(I have included a photo of this pair as part of a full garniture - please note the centrepiece in that photo is not offered in this listing, but I refer to it in some notes below)

Reference: P. D. Gordon Pugh, Staffordshire Portrait Figures, p. E431, pl. 24, figs 47 and 48

Height: 8” (Vining, the larger)

Date: c. 1840

Notes on the full garniture

This pair is believed to be part of a garniture which includes a centrepiece showing the two actresses in similar poses together. I have included a photograph of the full garniture for illustrative purposes but please note that the centrepiece is not available as part of this listing. The centrepiece figure has restoration - I am very happy to sell the whole garniture (assuming the centrepiece is still available) but please note that the condition of the centrepiece does not match that of the pair offered in this listing.

Price for full garniture (subject to availability): £170
