Girl with Rabbits and a Fox
A delightful and unusual spill holder depicting a girl with three pet rabbits on a rocky base. A fox watches hungrily from a higher rock.
This is a rare depiction of a child with rabbits and features several lovely details of good quality - specifically the separately moulded neck and head of the fox, and a separately moulded rabbit. Unusually, the shredded clay moss is decorated with green and russet (matching the fox and interior of the spill holder), and the rococo base is highlighted with green and orange which is distinctly uncommon for figures of this type.
The figure is in generally very good condition with no damage or restoration to the main scene or spill holder. There is a chip to the left-hand side of the rococo base but this does not effect the figure’s balance or presentation. There are some small flakes in a few places - mainly to over-glaze black and some of the orange highlights of the rococo base pattern. There are some firing flaws around the moulded elements of the girl’s body. Overall, this is a charming figure with excellent modelling and interesting decorative features.
Reference: Possibly unrecorded
Height: 7”
Date: c. 1850
Provenance: A substantial, high-quality private collection, name unknown.
