Gardeners (Dudson Factory)

£175.00

A rare and very fine pair of porcelaneous figures depicting gardeners, a product of the Dudson Factory.

The gardeners are decorated in a fashion typical of 1830s Dudson figures with vivid green elements, cobalt blue, and brown and gilt bases. The male gardener stands next to a spade and the female gardener is gathering produce in her apron. Both gardeners stand with their arms resting on white tree-like columns decorated with shredded clay parsley and toped with separately modelled red flowers.

These beautiful figures present excellently. The male gardener is in excellent condition with some light scuffs to his hat and a hairline on the underside of the base. The neck of the female gardener has been repaired - the repair is discretely concealed over the front but evidence of the repair is visible on the back under the brim of the hat. Despite this, both figures display very well.

Reference: A. Dudson & A. Morgan, Dudson Staffordshire Figures c. 1815 - c. 1865, p.40, fig. 48

Height: 6.5”

Date: c. 1830s

Provenance: A substantial, high-quality private collection, name unknown. (The former owner’s reference label has been left attached should the buyer be able to identify other figures from the same collection.)
