Gardener (possibly Lloyd of Shelton)

£65.00

A delightful and fine figure depicting a young female gardener.

The girl wears a white and gilt bodice, a floral-patterned skirt, orange shoes, a large gilded brimmed hat, and a blue apron. She holds a basket of flowers in her right hand and her apron is full of more flowers. She stands next to an elegant flower pot with a gilt pattern. The scene is modelled atop a rocky base with gilt details.

This figure might be attributed to John and Rebecca Lloyd of Shelton. It has an incised ‘X’ mark on the inside of the hollow base. The figure seems to be unrecorded but a similar example (modelled as a mirror image to this but on a round, gilt-banded base and with the podium on which the flower pot stands modelled as a fountain with flowing water) is known.

The figure is in excellent original condition with no damage, loss or repair. There is some staining to the white portions of the figure (particularly the back of the girl and the rim of the base) but otherwise the figure is in an enviable state.

Reference: Possibly unrecorded
