Fat Sailor

£125.00

A large, fun, and well modelled figure depicting a rotund sailor in rig typical of the mid- or late- 19th century.

He wears a pale blue shirt with white collar, black necktie, white belted trousers, and a yellow boater. Based on his size and certain stylistic clues, it is likely that the figure dates to the late 1860s or early 1870s. It is possible that the source for this figure is theatrical in nature rather than explicitly military or maritime.

This imposing and eye-catching figure is nicely modelled with good depth and textural detail. The face, in particular, is very lifelike.

The figure is offered in excellent professionally repaired condition. There is discreet, professional restoration to the neck (noticeable only at close inspection). There is some very minor flaking to the hair and base.

Height: 13”

Date: c. 1870
