Esmeralda and Gringoire
A colourful and lively figure depicting the characters of Esmeralda and Gringoire as presented in the Jules Perrot ballet La Esmeralda.
Esmeralda, wearing a pink skirt and blue and yellow bodice, holds a tambourine above her head. Gringoire (presumably played by Perrot himself) wears a blue jacket, white dress shirt, and peach breeches, and plays a triangle. A goat stands with its front legs on Esmeralda’s thigh.
This ballet was a popular subject for the Staffordshire potters and several pairs of figures are recorded depicting the two lead characters. This is one of the few group figures known. It is nicely decorated and well conceived with good life and depth. This figure is considerably better than the one illustrated in Harding Book Three.
The figure is in very good condition. Both noses have superficial wear and there is a small overpainted chip to the back of Gringoire’s hat.
Reference: A. & N. Harding, Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835 - 1875: Book Three, p. 103 (344), fig. a1297
Height: 9”
Date: c. 1850s
Provenance: A substantial, high-quality private collection, name unknown.
