English Sailor and French Soldier (Reversible)

£145.00

A charming and well modelled reversible figure depicting an English sailor on one side and a French soldier on the other.

The obverse side depicts an English sailor with a bonnet holding a red flag above his head with his right hand. A roped anchor lies beside his right leg. The reverse side depicts a uniformed French soldier with a tall hat holding a flag with his left hand. A pile of cannon balls lies by his left leg.

This cleverly designed desirable figure was produced in two sizes - 13” approx. (which is the rarer size) and 10” approx. which is offered here.

The figure is richly decorated, displays excellently, and is in generally good condition. There is an old superficial chip to the glaze and slip on the front of the gilded base of the reverse (French) side. Most black features (the hair and shoes of both sides, and the bow and anchor of the sailor) have been very discretely retouched to conceal flaking.

This delightful pot is a fantastic example of a Crimean War figure.
