Elizabeth Barrett Browning with Flush
A delightful, rare and desirable figure depicting the popular poet and abolitionist Elizabeth Barrett Browning with her beloved spaniel, Flush. The figure has been restored (please see the condition report below and the photographs provided).
Barrett Browning, resplendent in a corseted dress with long skirts decorated with gilt bows and ruffles, sits on a chaise-longue, her right arm resting on the back and her left in her lap. In her right hand, she holds a handkerchief. Flush - depicted here as a small black and white spaniel - lies alert and excitable to her left.
This figure is beautifully composed and decorated. Little details in modelling and colour bring the elegant scene to life. A pair to this figure depicting her husband, Robert Browning (in which Flush also appears) is recorded.
The figure displays beautifully but it is important to note some restoration. The neck has been repaired and the left hand has been fully restored. There are also smaller repairs to the lower corners of the chaise-longue. The standard of restoration is reasonable - not invisible, but not offensively amateur either. At a distance, it is difficult to tell, but as the pictures show the signs of restoration and repair are present.

Height: 5.5”
Date: c. 1840s
