Diminutive Bust of Lord Byron

£275.00

A very rare and fine bust of the poet, Lord Byron.

Standing at just over 5 inches, this is a delightful and obscure little figure full of charm and personality. A head-and-shoulders bust of Byron sits atop a square column on the diagonal which in turn sits on a simple square base. The bust itself is carefully decorated with overglaze enamels with good details in the face, and jaunty, rakish modelling. The column is white and has been decorated with simple gilt foliate motifs. The base of the column has a gilt band where it joins the lower square base (largely lost), and the lower square base also has a gilt band.

The figure is offered in nice condition. There is fairly advanced loss to the gilt - it has survived though with some light fading where it appears on the head-and-shoulders but is more extensively faded on the white column and base. There is some staining visible to the glaze over the white portions of the figure and some tiny nibbles around the bottom of the base. I cannot detect any professional repair or restoration though, as ever, would not entirely dismiss it.

One of these busts was offered at Bonhams, Chester, in 2008. I have found one similar example - the same head-and-shoulders but a slightly different column.

Reference: Possibly unrecorded

Height: 5.25”

Date: c. 1835
