A jaunty spill holder depicting two men dancing around a fire. Over the fire, a cooking pot is suspended.
It has been conjectured that the two men may represent travellers or gypsies, which was generally the intention behind pastoral figures featuring fires and cooking pots.
The simple figure is nicely decorated and offered in good condition. The inside of the spill holder may have been repainted, as has the hair of the two men. There is general age-related wear to parts of the glaze.
The Hardings reference this figure as being 5” high, but this version is slightly larger at 6.5” high.

Height: 6.5”
Date: c. 1860
Provenance: A substantial, high-quality private collection, name unknown
