A very powerful early figure made by the potter Obadiah Sherratt.
The figure - titled Christs Agony - depicts Christ praying in the Garden of Gethsemane before the crucifixion (Luke 22:43-44). Next to him is an angel carrying a cup and sitting on an altar on which are written the words Father Let This Cup Pass. The scene is decorated with floral sprigs (a hallmark of Sherratt figures). The figure once had bocage in the form of a tree behind Christ but this is lost.
The figure is offered for sale as found. The bocage is missing and the bocage trunk has been ‘finished’ by a restorer. The angel’s wings are lost and have not been restored. The angel’s hands and cup have been restored. Christ’s fingers have been restored. A small chip to the base has been restored. There are other chips around the base, and some enamel loss to Christ’s robes. There is some loss to the floral sprigs on the ground.
This figure presents very well on its own merits but has suffered considerable loss since it was made. Buyers should remember that they are purchasing this figure as found. It presents, therefore, an opportunity to own a very rare and fine original Sherratt bench group at a competitive price - albeit with flaws and not in its full original condition. It may be a candidate for professional restoration, or enjoyed as it is.
