Christ and the Woman of Samaria

£265.00

A lovely and very rare pair of Staffordshire figures depicting Jesus Christ and the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:4-42). This pair is associated with a larger monumental pair of the same subjects in a similar style, but this small pair is generally thought to be rarer.

Christ, wearing a long patterned and belted robe and pink cloak, stands with his hand raised in the act of ministering to the Samaritan woman. The Samaritan woman, wearing a similar robe, yellow cloak and pink hood, stands holding a green urn symbolising the water she came to draw.

The figures are beautifully designed - very nicely modelled and decorated with richness and depth to the folds of the clothing.

The pair displays very nicely, though I do not some small flaws. Both figures have slightly dark crazing. Christ’s finger is a little worn, as are some of the edges of the model. The woman’s neck has been repaired and partly restored to the extent that it is not especially noticeable when displayed but is apparent at closer inspection.

Reference: Stephen Duckworth, Victorian Staffordshire Pottery Religious Figures, p. 112, fig. B. 27a and B.27a

Height: 9.5” (the taller - Christ)

Date: c. 1850s

Provenance: The Stephen Duckworth Collection
