A superb and very rare Staffordshire holy water stoup depicting Christ appearing before either Pilate or Herod.
Christ is clothed in a white and gilt robe, and the soldier is dressed in his white and gilt uniform. The cross appears over Christ’s shoulder, symbolising the impending certainty of the crucifixion. Beneath the scene is an inset bucket-type holy water stoup, modelled with grapes and foliage.
The figure is in excellent condition. There are some small spots of flaking to the figures’ hair, some acculated grime in the stoup, but no damage.
