Child with Pony and Dog

£75.00

A delightful and unusual Staffordshire figure group modelled as a tulip spill vase featuring a child, a dog, and a rearing pony.

This lovely scene is a product of a pot bank sometimes referred to as the ‘Turquoise Factory’, noted for its unusual, vibrant turquoise bases and figures of good quality.

The child wears a cobalt tunic and orange cape. Their hair is underglaze black (which is typical for the black features of Turquoise Factory figures). The playful dog is spotted with underglaze black, as is the piebald, belted pony. A large, colourful tulip emerges from the top of the figure.

The subject of the figure is not clear but it may be a circus theme.

The figure presents well though some small flaws should be noted. The right ear of the dog has been chipped and has been overpainted to conceal the loss. There are some small nibbles around the rim of the tulip and these have also been overpainted. Flakes to the turquoise base as well as the green foliage and pink petals of the tulip have been discreetly overpainted. The underside of the rim of the base has split though this does not affect the aesthetic appeal of the figure. Though imperfect, the figure makes for a charming and vibrant display.

A mirror-image pair (with a girl) is recorded, as are non-turquoise versions.
